eye witness account of mr.Sam Uwakin, 26 juli 2007
35 Africans deported on 26th of july 2007

In the early morning of the 26th of july some 35 people - arrested at the police raid of 16th of june 2007 - were lifted from their beds for deportation to Nigeria and other African countries. They were not allowed to dress or to take any of their belongings. People who protested were cuffed and brutalised. Here's the story of two of them.
EYE WITNESS ACCOUNT OF MR. SAM UWAKIN, a deportee from Rotterdam to Nigeria

On the 26th of July, 2007 we were woken up at about 5 am at our detention centre in Rotterdam and taken to the Rotterdam airport. We were put in a place that look like a repair centre for aircrafts.

At about 10 am myself and 34 other deportees where taken aboard a flight that we could not identify. The aircraft was brought close to the repair workshop, where we all boarded. On the body of the aircraft, I saw just some Arabic signs, which did not look real, but looked like a cover up for the true identity of the airline.. We where not allowed to take anything with us. I just had a bathroom slippers on. We got into the flight with 4 police officers assigned to one deportee. Two on the left and two on the right. Some of us were even cuffed. These where people who protested the deportation and the manner. They where made to sit at the back of the plane with the cuffs around their waist to prevent them from getting up. We then took off.

After 2 or 3 hours, we arrived in Palma de Majorca, Spain where we refuelled. We then took off again. We landed at Murtala Mohammed International Airport at about 5.30 pm. Surprisingly enough, we landed at a deserted area of the airport, close to the cargo section.
On landing one would have thought we would have met immigration officials on ground to receive us and double check our nationalities, but we met just one custom official, who at our protest about what we should do after having alighted from the plane told us that you all received 50Euro each, you could as well use that to find your way home.
During the flight there was also a black man whom we thought was part of the police. And on arriving at the MM international airport we saw or noticed that this gentleman was signing some papers and we also noticed that one envelope was handed over to him which we suspected could have contained some money. On realising that this man was not a part of the Dutch security team but a Nigerian, we where angry and wanted to accost him for signing the documents and possibly taking some form of bribe. But some of the other deportees advised us against doing this since we had just arrived and had little or nothing with us. Secondly, also we have been away for a long time and we were not familiar with the situation back home anymore. We also noticed that after we all had alighted from the plane, none of the Dutch security officials came down.
There was also a lady deportee with us who was taken back to Holland I suppose, because there must have been a mistake as to where she was supposed to be deported to. This even makes it more interesting since there was not a single immigration officer to cross check identities and destinations.

What was most terrible about the deportation, was that most of us were deported in our sleeping clothes and some of us had no shoes on, just slippers. We where not allowed to take along our few personals belongings. Any attempt to complain was seen as a resistance to deportation.
What also seemed strange about it was that we never signed any papers in Holland and Nigeria - and yet we where deported.
The way some of us were cuffed around the waist like animals seemed inhuman just because we protested about the manner of deportation. Also the fact that an international plane landed in Nigeria at the airport without no single immigration officer to double check our identities seems absurd.
