On the occasion of the Day of Global Action Against Racism and for the Rights of Migrants, Refugees and Displaced People, Boats 4 People is mobilising in order to raise awareness of and condemn the situation affecting thousands of migrants who risk their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean. Below you will find a list of events planned in Tunisia, the Netherlands, Belgium, USA, Germany and France.
Tunisia: 11.00: In front of the Italian embassy in Tunis - Demonstration of support and solidarity with irregular migrants and the families of the disappeared. 17.00: Show: « HAREK YETMANNA » (Social comedy by Raouf Ben Yaghlen) at the municipal theatre in Tunis.

BOATS4PEOPLE BENEFIET: VOOR HET RECHT OP VRIJE MIGRATIE
Zondag 18 december zijn we aan het Amsterdamse IJ solidair met de bootmigranten op de Middellandse Zee. In de Amsterdamse haven, vlakbij het Centraal Station, treden aan wal en op het water diverse bands, sprekers en dichters op als benefiet voor de campagne Boats4people.
Boats4people zal in april 2012 de Middellandse Zee opgaan met een vloot van solidaireitsboten. Aan boord zullen activisten en waarnemers de activiteiten van EU-agentschap Frontex in de Middellandse Zee nauwgezet volgen. In de Middellandse Zee wordt de oorlog tegen migratie pijnlijk duidelijk; duizenden mensen verdrinken ieder jaar in de slotgracht rond Fort Europa. De vloot wordt een varend protest tegen de repressieve migratiepolitiek van Europa, dat getekend wordt door een steeds verder toenemende criminalisering, een flinke dosis racisme en dat desastreuze gevolgen heeft. Tijdens het benefiet bij Hannekes Boom zal er -naast heel veel muziek- op diverse manieren aandacht worden gevraagd voor het recht op vrije migratie. Behalve het concert in Amsterdam zijn er op deze dag, de wereldwijde actiedag voor migranten (globalmigrantsaction.org ) ook evenementen in andere landen, waaronder Tunesië (trailer global migrant action ).

Het kanaal van Sicilië is een passage tussen Afrika en Europa voor alle mensen die uit het Afrikaanse continent voor conflicten vluchten of die vertrekken om een betere leven te zoeken. Sinds jaren hebben het netwerk van Migreurop samen met Afrikaanse en Europese organisaties meer dan 13000 doden geteld aan de grenzen van Europa, waarvan de meerderheid in de Middellandse Zee en meer specifiek in het Kanaal van Sicilië.

Boats4People will start in April 2012
Ships of Solidarity against the death of refugees and migrants in the Mediterranean Sea
In summer 2011 the list of boat people drowning or dying of thirst was getting longer. The situation is and remains unbearable. Thus, anti-racist networks demand immediate action to arrest the deathly EU border regime. For several months now (1) a transnational project 'Ships of solidarity - stop the death in the Mediterranean Sea' is being developed to support refugees and migrants by intervention on site on their way to Europe. In April 2012, several small ships will set sail in Italy in the opposite direction to the escape routes of the boat people: most likely from Rome via Sicily and Lampedusa to different ports in Tunisia.

We have come to the conclusion that it is essential now to move to direct action in the light of the excessive number of shipwrecks taking place in the Mediterranean and the reluctance of Europe to concede entry to refugees.

Er kan geen democratie bestaan zonder wereldwijde vrijheid van beweging
De dynamiek van de Arabische lente wekt in de hele wereld enthousiasme op. De opstandige bewegingen in de Maghreb bieden hoop, maar niet alleen omdat despotische regimes die onoverwinnelijk geacht werden verjaagd werden. Hoewel de richting van de verdere ontwikkeling open blijft, is duidelijk dat het domino-effect van de Tunesische 'Jasmijn'-revolutie snel het besef terugbracht dat geschiedenis van onderaf gemaakt wordt. De strijd is zowel gericht tegen de dagelijkse armoede als tegen de algemene onderdrukking, ze is net zo goed gericht op betere levensomstandigheden als op respect, in het kort: "brood en rozen".
